Shearwater was laid up in Rhode Island and finished in 1998 by J Composites in France.  Many prefer the J Composites finish design over the US option. A notable difference on deck is the large anchor locker forward, something many US finished boats do not have, and below the deck, various comfort differences are obvious. Shearwater is currently upgraded, outfitted, and looking beautiful with new topside paint – she is ready to cruise or race in style today.

Under her previous ownership, Shearwater competed and won the J/120 one-design class at Key West Race Week. Since purchasing Shearwater in late 2011, the current owners sailed eastbound across the Atlantic in 2012 where the NKE autopilot steered 99% of the crossing, including a top speed over 14 knots. They grabbed the helm when it seemed particularly fun and averaged over 170 miles per day for 20 days. After shipping the boat back across the Atlantic, they sailed double-handed across the Gulf of Mexico in 2013 to her home in Texas. They then shipped her up and over to California and raced double-handed to Hawaii in 2014. Another couple returned Shearwater from Hawaii to the PNW in 2014 where she has berthed since. Shearwater is frequently raced double-handed or what they referred to as “fully crewed” – just 4 or 5 sailors.
